The World War I
The World War 1 started in 1914 and it ended in 1918. This war was between the Central Powers (Germany, Bulgaria, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire and their colonies) and the Allied Power (Great Britain, Russia, Italy, and the United States entered in 1917).
Why did it start?
1.Nationalism: Germany was proud in their military power.2.Militarism: Germany was building a large navy.3.Economic rivalry: British felt threatened of Germany’s economic growth.4.Imperial rivalry: European countries were competing for colonies.5.Alliance System: there were Central Powers and Allied Powers, which they were signing treaties secretly.
How did the World War 1 started?
Before the World War 1, Serbia was belonging to Austria-Hungary. Gavrilo Princip was from Serbia, who was a nationalist. He was considered like that because he felt that Serbia should be independent from Austria-Hungary. In June 28, 1914 Princip killed Francis Ferdinand, who was going to take the throne in Austria-Hungary. In July 28, 1914 Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. After that the war started between the Central Powers and the Allies Powers.
What did they use in the World War 1?
In this war they used machine guns that was the major machine. They used tanks, submarines, and poison gas. Also, for the first time, they used airplanes.
The Russian Revolutions
March Revolution
In 1917, Russia had a revolution, and many people were starving. There were two revolutions happening there. In March of 1917, workers wanted food and they were starving. Women were shouting in the streets for bread. They threw the monarchy, and a provisional (temporary) government was set up by Duma (the legislative body of Russia).
November Revolution
Before the November Revolution, people were hungry and they wanted food and land. The monarchy was collapsed and a temporary government was set up. Lenin, became the leader of Russia. He believed in Marxism. He threw the temporary government, and let the Bolsheviks (communists group) seize the power. After the November Revolution, people started to work, and they had labor. The Bolsheviks ended the private ownership, and workers took the control of factories.
The U.S. enters the war
The U.S. wanted to stay neutral. However, in 1917, Germany declared unrestricted submarine warfare (which they were sinking ships without warning). Germany sank three U.S. ships for the Britain. In April of 1917, the United States entered the war, and they were sending several troops to France each month. By the 1918, Germans were exhausted. The Allied Powers sent about 300 tanks to broke the German lines. At the end of 1918, the Central Powers lost, and Germany signed an agreement to end the war.
What countries were formed after the WW1?
Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Netherlands, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia, Albania, Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine.
The countries of Germany and Russia lost much of territories in Europe. New nations were formed from these territories.
