King John
In 1204, King John was defeated by Philip Augustus that took his lands, in France. When King John lost his land the troubles had begun. He tried to get his land back from Philip Augustus. He raised taxes on his barons (nobles). In 1214, Philip Augustus defeated King John again.
When King John returned to England, he was forced by his barons to sign the Manga Carta, or Great Charter. In June 15, 1215, the meeting was in a meadow that called Runnymede on the Thames River, in England.
On the Magna Carta there were 63 clauses, and the most important were: Clause12 that said the king can not raise taxes without the agreement of the Great Council. Clause 39 said that a person have the right to a jury trial and that work for everybody.
King John died in 1216, after the year that he signed the Magna Carta.
